Devil’s Advocate: The Untold Story

the devil's advocate

Devil’s Advocate is a biopic of famous Indian Journalist Karan Thapar. He talks about his childhood, education, journalist career, his relations with politicians and backstage stories of various interviews he has conducted.

The most interesting read in this book is the anecdotes relating to the interviews of Karan Thapar. He is well known to be an aggressive interviewer. The stories relating to his interviews with Narendra Modi, one in which he walks out, Jayalalitha, Amitabh Bachchan, Barack Obama, Sachin Tendulkar and various other famed celebs are detailed. These incidences he wrote throw light into the personalities of these eminent figures.

The book gets into detail of his personal life as well. His personal life beginning from his childhood and school days is detailed. Thapar writes about his education at Cambridge, Oxford Universities and about his late wife, Nisha.

Karan Thapar had a personal relation with Benazir Bhutto, when both where in England for education, Sanjay Gandhi and with Suu Kyi which he has detailed. He also enjoyed personal relations with various other eminent political figures from India. The ways in which he analyses them, based on his experiences, is a must read.

I found this book interesting for three reasons- for what it reveals of life at world famous universities, for how he portraits his personal relations & experiences with politicians and for the anecdotes relating to his well known interviews.
